• Give yourself plenty of space and ride defensively. People driving cars often have difficulty seeing motorcyclists and reacting in time.
• Develop good riding techniques and practice before getting into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your motorcycle in conditions such as wet roads, high winds and uneven surfaces.
• Always follow the posted speeding limit.
• Don’t ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Be aware of the blind spots of other drivers and avoid weaving between lanes.
• Use lane positioning to be seen. Ride in the part of the lane where you are most visible.
• Wear a quality helmet and eye protection.
• Use bright clothing, a light-colored helmet and reflective strips or decals on your clothing or motorcycle to increase your visibility for other drivers.
• Leather or other thick clothing materials will protect you while riding your motorcycle. Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots and gloves.
• Make sure that your headlight works and is on day and night.
• Flash your brake light when slowing down and before stopping.
• Watch for turning vehicles, signal your next move in advance and don’t be afraid to use your horn.
• Be vigilant and beware of changing road conditions.
