Plovdiv Province is one of the most advanced provinces in Bulgaria, home to Plovdiv, the second largest city, and an important agricultural region since ancient times.
The province is divided into 18 municipalities. Plovdiv, the largest, is ancient Philipoppolis, the city of Philip of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great. Hisarya contains a famous hot springs resort, fortified by the Romans with walls that still encircle much of the town.
All of the municipalities have lost population over the last 30 years, with only Plovdiv gaining recently.
