A Short History of New Jersey

The Delaware Indian Tribe

The earliest known inhabitants of New Jersey were the Delaware Indians, who came to the region over 10,000 years ago. They spoke an Algonquin language and called themselves the Lenni Lenape. An eastern woodlands tribe, they lived in small family clans organized in a matriarchal society. There were perhaps as many as 20,000 Delaware Indians living in New Jersey when the first European settlers arrived.

Early Colonial Contacts

Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to explore the New Jersey shore in 1524. He left detailed accounts of his voyages to America, but little development came to New Jersey as a result of his travels.

In 1609, Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch crown, further explored the region and claimed New Netherland as a Dutch colony. In 1621, the Dutch issued a charter to the Dutch West India Company, who focused on developing the fur trade in North America.

In 1664, the British seized the colony by force, and the future of the colony remained in contention until finally decided in favor of the British in the Treaty of Westminster that ended the Third Anglo-Dutch War in 1674.

British Rule

The British named their new territory the Province of New Jersey after the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey, which had remained loyal to the king during the English Civil War.

Most of the early colonists were farmers who made good use of the fertile New Jersey land.

New Jersey is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, and is bordered by New York to the north, the Atlantic ocean to the east, Philadelphia to the west, and Delaware to the south.
