Broadway Tower is a folly built in the form of a castle on the second highest point in the Cotswolds. The tower stands 65 feet (20 meters) tall and offers some of the most expansive views available over the Cotswolds escarpment. On a clear day visitors can see up to 16 counties from the rooftop viewing platform.
History of Broadway Tower
Broadway Tower was built for Barbara, Lady Coventry, to find out whether a beacon lit on the hill could be seen from her home, some 22 miles (35 Kilometers) away. Indeed, it could.
The tower was envisioned by renowned landscape architect Capability Brown, and designed by architect James Wyatt. It was completed in 1799.
During the 19th century, Broadway Hill housed Middle Hill Press, the publishing house of Thomas Phillipps, a book and manuscript collector who hailed from the area. It later served as a country retreat for artists including William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones.
Today the tower is the centerpiece of Broadway Tower Country Park and a fixture along the route of the Cotswold Way, a British National Trail.
