The City of London, also referred simply as “the City,” occupies the historic center of London and is the heart of the modern British financial services industry. It is the smallest county in England. It is sometimes called “the square mile” due to its physical area of 1.12 square miles. It has a residential population of less than 10,000 people, but over 300,000 people commute there for work every day.

The City of London is home to a number of historic buildings, including Sir Christopher Wren’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Guildhall, the Bank of England, the Custom House, the Old Bailey and the Royal Exchange. The Monument to the Great Fire of London is a commemorative column near the north end of London Bridge. Other landmarks include the former home of lexicographer Samuel Johnson and Prince Henry’s Room, one of only a few surviving buildings dating to before the Great Fire.

There are a number of gardens and open spaces available for public enjoyment.
