The Little Pheasant Castle is regarded the last castle in Saxony preserved in the original style of the Dresden Rococo. In just over 13 square meters, Johann Daniel Schade created an architectural marvel with all of the necessary appointments to ease the princely life.
The castle was built by Augustus the Strong as a pheasantry intended to breed birds for the royal table, but was destroyed during the Seven Years War (1756-1763).
The current castle was rebuilt by Elector Frederick Augustus I between 1770 and 1776, adopting chinoise forms. Improvements included the Yarn House, a well, the alphabet hedge, Count Marcolini’s residential home, wheat barns, stables and sheds for coaches. The pier, lighthouse, miniature port, replica Dardanelles and two artificial islands were added in 1775-6.

Architecture The Little Pheasant Castle is renowned for its fine rococo style. Features include murals on canvas, inlaid wood paneling, painted and gilded stucco ceilings, and unique finishes crafted from exotic materials.
Tapestries The recently restored tapestries of silk, straw, feathers and pearls are a must see unique installation.

Lighthouse and Miniature Harbor Built for the amusement of the royals, where they could enjoy battle reenactments on a small scale.

Accessibility at the Little Pheasant Castle
The Little Pheasant Castle and the upper floor of the adjacent Visitor Center (gallery with changing special exhibitions) are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Visitor Center accessibility is limited to the garden café, museum shop and the restrooms.
- Driveway up to the entrance of the Visitor Center, 10% inclined, 30 m long.
- Freely accessible entrance on the ground floor to the Visitor Center, with the garden café, shop and restrooms.
- Doors in the Visitor Center are sufficiently wide.
- The Little Pheasant Castle is not accessible for wheelchair users.
- The upper floor of the Little Pheasant Castle (gallery/special exhibition) is not accessible for wheelchair users.
