The Presidential Libraries are a unique resource for preservation, research and exploration of the lives and legacies of United States Presidents. Starting with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who raised private funds to build a library that he then gave to the United States as an archival resource for the country, each successive President has likewise chosen a location and developed a library for the benefit of the nation. The process became law in 1955 with passage of the Presidential Libraries Act.
President Ronald Reagan called the Presidential Libraries “classrooms of Democracy,” for they are much more than simple repositories. They are archives and museums that preserve written, spoken, andvisual history, storehouses and museums displaying physical artifacts of our presidents and the nation during their terms of office. They illuminate the life, career and historical context of each President, offer special programs and exhibits that amplify their holdings, and provide a unique resource for research into Presidential and national history.
Presidential Libraries and Museums are open to the public on a walk in basis and for research activities by appointment through the appropriate governing organizations.
