Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state, with over 120 light stations dotting the shoreline of the Great Lakes State. Michigan historic lighthouses number 42 on Lake Michigan, 39 on Lake Superior, 31 on Lake Huron, 4 on Lake Clair, and 5 located on rivers in the state. A light station might refer to a complex of buildings or just a stand alone light. State and local authorities have worked tirelessly to restore Michigan historic lighthouses, and many of them are open to visitors and/or contain museum exhibits celebrating Michigan lighthouse history and heritage.

Michigan Historic Lighthouses Preservation and Renovation Efforts
Michigan residents are proud of their historic lighthouses, and operate the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program to generate interest and funds to preserve and restore lighthouses around the state. The Michigan Save Our Lights campaign takes advantage of the Federal National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 and the National Park Service Maritime Heritage Program to identify, transfer, restore, and preserve these valuable and irreplaceable icons of Michigan state history.
