Maine at a Glance

Maine is an outdoor traveler’s paradise with scenic coastline, abundant forests, imposing mountains and more islands than you can count, all waiting to be explored and enjoyed.

Summer tourists flock to the sandy beaches like Ogunquit, York and Old Orchard Beach, but there is a lot more to the Maine coast than just beaches. The state boasts 3468 miles of tidal coastline and 3166 islands, so there is plenty of waterfront action to explore. Lighthouses dot the shore, including West Quoddy Head Light at the easternmost point in the United States.

Shoppers flock to the L.L. Bean store in Freeport, the nation’s first 24/7/365 retail outlet and an outdoor products icon since 1912.

Acadia is the only national park in New England. It has everything for the outdoor enthusiast, including mountains, scenic coastline, lots of trails, water sports and wildlife, as well as Bar Harbor, a fabulous gateway town.

Wilderness lovers head inland to Baxter State Park and Mt.Katahdin, the highest point in the state and endpoint of the famous Appalachian Trail.

No visit to Maine would be complete without a lobster meal. Stop at one of the local lobster shacks, or choose a romantic seafood restaurant for an intimate night out with your special someone.

Maine was contested territory between the British and the French for much of the colonial era, with British rule settled finally by the 1763 French and Indian War. During the American Revolutionary War, the British plotted to seize Maine and turn it into a permanent haven for loyalists, but opposition from patriotic locals doomed the plan to failure. Vague terms in the Treaty of Paris left Maine with unsettled border disputes that persist even to the present day.

Maine began to industrialize in the early 1800’s through exploitation of the vast stores of harvestable lumber in the Great North Woods. Initially shipped south to mills in Massachusetts, by the 1850’s business owners started building mills along the Maine coast as well.

The long coast, deep ports, and proximity to timber combined to make Maine a leader in shipping and shipbuilding. The Bath Iron Works, established in 1882, is one of the largest shipbuilders for the U.S. Navy.

Long a favored leisure destination of New Englanders, tourism is now the largest industry in the state.

Maine is in the northeast corner of the United States, bordered by New Hampshire to the west, the Canadian provinces Quebec and New Brunswick to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east. West Quoddy Head is the easternmost point in the USA.

The state is divided into three distinct areas: Coastal Lowlands, the Central Uplands, and the Appalachian Mountains in the west and northwest part of the state.

The Maine coast is long and scenic, a picturesque mixture of rocky shores, sandy beaches inlets and islands that beckon tourists and other nature lovers.

The central uplands are a vast sea of forest covering over 80% of the state, making Maine the most forested state in the union. Exploitation of timber resources dominated the state economy for over 100 years, leading to development of influential positions in the shipbuilding, lumber, wood pulp and paper industries.

The Longfellow Mountains of western Maine are an extension of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The summit of Mount Katahdin, 5267 feet, is the highest point in the state and the northern terminus of the famous Appalachian Trail.

Maine is synonymous with lobster. Its 100 million pound annual production represents over 90% of the American lobster catch and about 50% of the industry worldwide. You can buy it locally, have it shipped anywhere, or enjoy it the old fashioned way, at a local restaurant or seaside lobster shack.

Blueberries are another great local crop that can be enjoyed in many different forms: fresh fruit, dried, preserves, or syrup. You’ll find them in muffins and pancakes everywhere.

It doesn’t take a genius to guess that seafood is high on the list of specials at almost any Maine restaurant.
