Alberta at a Glance
Alberta is the westernmost of the three prairie provinces and the service hub of the Canadian oil shale industry. It is made up of mostly agricultural land with the Rocky Mountains straddling the western border of the state. It is home to five of Canada’s eighteen UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump,
Edmonton, the provincial capital, is known for the Edmonton Folk Festival and Edmonton Mall. Calgary, Alberta’s largest city, hosts the annual Calgary Stampede, celebrating cowboy culture. Banff and Jasper are important jumping off points for outdoor tourism in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Alberta is home to five Canadian National Parks. Banff National Park has been called the best national park in the world. Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Canadian Rockies and a haven for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor recreational activities. Waterton Lakes National Park, coupled with Glacier National Park in the USA, is part of the oldest trans-border protected area in the world. Elk Island National Park was established as a wildlife preserve. Wood Buffalo National Park protects the wood bison habitat and is the world’s largest dark-sky preserve.
